In a bid to fight global warming, the global Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) sector is to find solutions to travel. The industry received an official mandate to promote travel and transport cutbacks at the 6th International Telecommunications Union Symposium on ICTs, the Environment and Climate Change recently held in Accra, Ghana.
The UN sponsored policy has broad implications, but one area of particular note is in the business meeting sector. ICT companies are being actively encouraged to develop virtual meeting solutions which will reduce the need for travel and transportation and alleviate associated environmental impacts. Video conferencing is a significant threat to the MICE industry, particularly on a small scale. As technology improves, telecommuting is becoming more sophisticated and saving time and travel costs as well. According to a Bangkok Post report, some companies are already developing technologies for virtual exhibitions which will allow conferencing on a large scale.
