Hyatt has unveiled plans for a major new development in Australia.
The company is creating the country’s first Hyatt Place hotel at Essendon Airport in Victoria, which will be attached to a large MICE venue.
Scheduled to open in early 2017, the new Hyatt Place will be positioned at a new entrance to Essendon Fields. The Larkin Events Centre will be a 1,700m² event space, including divisible indoor function space and a covered outdoor area. Combined, the two areas will be able to seat 1,200 people.
Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss, attended the launch of the new development.
“Airports are now business destinations in their own right and provide a powerful economic engine for their home region and local communities,” Truss said. “Not only will this development contribute towards local job creation on-site, the broader economy will benefit through the demand for day-to-day goods and services needed to operate the facilities.”
Chris Cowan, Essendon Fields’ CEO, commented; “Today, our vision to deliver Melbourne’s northwest an international first class hotel and state-of-the-art events centre becomes a reality. The hotel is an exciting addition to Essendon Fields and will service a growing need for airport travellers and local businesses.”
Essendon became Melbourne’s first international airport in 1950, before the opening of Tullamarine Airport in 1970. It was privatised in 2001 and is now being transformed into business and aviation hub under the Essendon Fields project.
