Everything You Need to Know About Adjoining Hotel Rooms and Unique Group Stays

The hospitality industry lost billions in revenue as a result of COVID-19. To help recoup some of those lost dollars and provide unique hotel experiences when travel began to re-open, many hotels have made changes to make it easier for travelers to book adjoining, connecting, and adjacent rooms.

Interested in sharing a hotel floor, suite or adjoining rooms? Here’s a look at how hotels are embracing the desire for unique stays.

Adjoining, Adjacent and Other Group-Friendly Room Types

Adjoining rooms are connected with an interior door, allowing the parties to move freely between them. These family-friendly accommodations are an excellent option for groups of friends or relatives who want to share space, yet also enjoy privacy.

Adjacent rooms are side-by-side rooms that don’t have a connecting door. Adjacent accommodations are common options for family vacations, reunions, or wedding parties, and are often the preferred option for business travelers.

Alternatively, some travelers book two-bedroom suites as a way to ensure that their entire party will stay together — or even new options, like entire hotel floors. These, however, are a more expensive option and are not available at all properties.

What to Keep In Mind When Booking a Special Room Type

At a smaller site, booking an adjacent or adjoining room may not be of much concern. But the desire to book connecting rooms is prevalent at larger properties and resorts with multiple floors, towers, and hundreds of rooms available. Most groups traveling together prefer that the individual members of their party stay within close proximity of one another, rather than being spread throughout the property.

Be sure to request adjoining rooms before you check in at the front desk, and confirm them if you can. Booking them in advance is necessary — although, at many hotel properties, there is still no guarantee that you’ll get connected rooms or even be in rooms in the same area of the hotel.

Some Hotels are Making Unique Stays Easier to Book

While many hotels won’t confirm two or more rooms next door to one another, one major brand will: Hilton.

Hilton recently launched a new campaign featuring Paris Hilton, that focuses on their fresh approach to booking and confirming adjoining rooms in advance. The commercials show the Paris reserving an adjoining room to hold all of her extra luggage, but it’s a feature that the hotel brand is rolling out for much more practical reasons:

  • Families that want their children or relatives closeby
  • Business colleagues needing to be side-by-side to field after-hours conference calls or tackle work projects without having to leave their rooms

For business travelers, connected rooms allow for the flexibility to enjoy privacy when needed, but also to be able to collaborate simply by opening the door that connects their individual spaces.

More Hotels That Offer Special Adjoining Room Accommodations

However, Hilton isn’t the only hotel making it easier to book adjoining hotel rooms and unique stay situations.

Here’s a look at some special hotels that you can book right now through Hotel Engine:

Dallas, TX: Omni Dallas Hotel

The Omni Dallas Hotel has two types of two bedroom suites that are perfect for groups of up to six. At 1,499 square feet, their Executive King Two Bedroom Suite features two private bedrooms with one king bed, two queen beds, three bathrooms and a comfortable seating area.

It’s an excellent option for groups or families that want to stay in the same room, yet still enjoy privacy.

San Francisco, CA: Beacon Grand, A Union Square Hotel

The Beacon Grand offers classic guestrooms and suites but suggests connecting a classic king guestroom with a Beacon Grand suite to create a mini apartment set up. This combination includes two private bedrooms, a dining area to seat six, a living room and a rooftop terrace.

Oregon’s Willamette Valley: Atticus Hotel

The bunkhouse at the Atticus Hotel offers comfortable, luxurious accommodations for up to six people. It includes a king bed, built-in bunk beds to sleep four, a luxe bathroom with double sinks, and a living space with a fireplace.

The Atticus also rents a penthouse suite that sleeps six people. It includes two private bedrooms, two private bathrooms, a living room with a fireplace, and amenities such as a butler’s pantry and an island bar.

Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee: Bode

Bode offers a variety of unique stay options, including two and three bedroom suites with king beds in separate bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room. These suites range in size from 1,100 to 1,200 square feet, offering a comfortable amount of space for families and groups.

Need a space that can accommodate up to 12 guests?

At Bode, you can also book a 2,200 square foot space that includes four bedrooms with king beds, plus an additional bunk bed bonus room, a full kitchen and four bathrooms.

Silverthorne, Colorado: The Pad

The Pad offers a variety of room accommodations, including shared dorms and private group rooms.

The shared dorms have a hostel-inspired feel, with twin XL bunk beds, shared bathrooms, and a community kitchen space. The private group rooms feature six individual twin XL beds, a shared bathroom with four individual showers, private changing rooms, and a shared kitchen.

Additional Options

There are many properties around the country that make it easy to book room blocks for large groups, as well as adjoining and adjacent rooms for smaller groups of travelers.

Some more options to consider include:

  • Omaha, NE: Kimpton Cottonwood, an IHG Hotel
  • Chicago, IL: Westin Michigan Avenue
  • Washington, DC: Royal Sonesta Dupont Circle
