Lufthansa Debuts Dreamliner on Frankfurt-Toronto Route

The first of the carrier’s new Boeing 787-9s are set to be rolled out on the winter schedule

September 16, 2021

Lufthansa has confirmed that its Frankfurt-Toronto route will be the first service for its Boeing 787-9 aircraft this winter. The German airline group had announced earlier this year the purchase of ten new widebody aircraft, including five 787-9s and five Airbus A350-900s.

Deliveries of the Boeing Dreamliners are set for the first half of 2022. Lufthansa said at the time that the Boeing aircraft would be delivered at relatively short notice, because the aircraft, which were already manufactured, had been destined for other carriers before the onset of the COVID-19 crisis.

In a tweet last week Lufthansa said: “Exciting news from Lufthansa’s “Dreamliner” team: The first destination for our @BoeingAirplanes 787-9 will be YYZ @TorontoPearson, with service from @Airport_FRA.”

Subsequently the group announced, “The first Boeing 787-9 aircraft is scheduled to operate for Lufthansa within the coming winter schedule, with others to follow in the first half of 2022.” The airline group has not yet announced what seating products will be featured on these Dreamliners.

Despite Lufthansa’s announcement, deliveries of the new aircraft could be delayed by a dispute between the airplane maker and the Federal Aviation Administration regarding inspections on some undelivered 787s. According to reports in the Wall Street Journal, deliveries of new 787 Dreamliners will likely remain halted until at least late October.
