Mexico, Ecuador, and More: Airlines Boost Service to Key Latin American Markets

Flights resume and frequencies increase to Cozumel, Monterrey, Guayaquil and Panama City
With international air travel on the rebound, airlines are reinstating north-south routes between the US and Canada and destinations in Latin America that had been on hold during the pandemic travel slump.
Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta and Copa Airlines have all announced the resumption of services or increasing frequencies to key markets in Mexico, Ecuador and Panama.
Toronto-Cozumel
Starting Oct. 30, Air Canada will resume seasonal service between Toronto and Cozumel, a route which the carrier has not offered for six months. Flights will operate once weekly in November, increasing to twice weekly in December and to three times a week beginning in January 2023. Flights will operate aboard either Airbus A319s or A321s.
Detroit-Monterrey
Delta Air Lines has announced plans to resume flights between Detroit and Monterrey, Mexico, starting Sept. 6. The year-round service, which was suspended in March 2020, will operate four times weekly on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, aboard a three-class Airbus A319 with 132 seats.
Monterrey is the carrier’s third destination in Mexico from Detroit, in addition to daily services to Cancun and Mexico City.
Delta has also announced two more seasonal services to destinations in Mexico from Detroit on its winter schedule. Starting Dec. 17, the carrier will offer weekly flights to San Jose del Cabo (SJD) and Puerto Vallarta. In addition, Detroit-Cancun service will increase to twice daily.
Miami-Guayaquil
Next month, American Airlines will increase frequency between its Miami hub and Guayaquil, Ecuador. Starting August 4, the carrier will operate three flights daily through the end of September aboard its 737 Max aircraft with 172 seats. American Airlines is the only carrier flying between Miami and Guayaquil.
Boston-Panama City
Copa Airlines has resumed its four times-weekly flights between Panama City and Boston following a six-month hiatus. The route is the Panamanian flag carrier’s 14th destination in the US.
Flights from Panama City operate Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Service from Boston operates Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
The flights, which operate aboard Boeing 737-800s, are the only nonstops between Panama City and Boston.
