New routes include three times-weekly services from both Washington, DC, and Atlanta

Two US airlines have announced the launch of new nonstop services to Cape Town, South Africa. United Airlines is set to begin flights to Cape Town from Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC, starting Nov. 17, while Delta Air Lines will operate a new nonstop from Atlanta to Cape Town beginning Dec. 17.

Washington DC – Cape Town

United’s service is the first nonstop between the US capital and the South African city, operating aboard a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with 48 lie-flat United Polaris business class seats, 21 United Premium Plus seats and 188 economy seats.

Flights will operate three times a week on Monday, Thursday and Saturday departing Dulles at 6:40 p.m. and arriving in Cape Town at 4:10 p.m. the following day. The returning flights depart Cape Town on Friday, Sunday and Tuesday at 8:50 p.m., arriving in Washington at 5:50 a.m. the following morning.

The new service, which is pending approval by the South African government, is in addition to the carrier’s existing Newark-Cape Town nonstop, which also operates three times each week. The new route will bring to 19 the total number of weekly flights the airline has scheduled to African destinations.

Atlanta – Cape Town

Delta’s new service between Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International and Cape Town, which is also awaiting government approval, is scheduled to begin operations on Dec. 17 with three times-weekly service aboard the Airbus A350-900.

The outbound flights, scheduled for 14 hours 25 minutes, depart Atlanta on Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 8:50 p.m., arriving in Cape Town at 6:15 p.m. the following evening. Return services operate Tuesday, Friday and Sunday departing Cape Town at 10:50 p.m. and arriving in Atlanta at 8 a.m. the following morning.

With the addition of the Cape Town-Atlanta service to its existing route between Atlanta and Johannesburg, Delta will offer up to ten times weekly service to destinations in South Africa.
