Avelo Airlines and Breeze Airways are ramping up with affordable discount services

Since launching last year, both Avelo Airlines and Breeze Airways have been making waves in the U.S. market with burgeoning connections between first- and second-tier cities. While large airlines were focused on reducing flights during the pandemic, Texas-based Avelo and Utah-based Breeze were busy ramping up with affordable discount services.

Avelo Airlines now serves 27 destinations primarily from three hubs: Los Angeles Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), Connecticut’s Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) and Orlando International Airport (MCO). Key benefits include no change or cancellation fees, no assistance charges and low fares augmented by unbundled add-ons, such as checked bags, carry-on overhead bags and bringing a pet onboard. Flyers can expect 737-700 and -800 models for these flights.

Breeze Airways, which was launched by JetBlue founder and former CEO David Neeleman, offers a similar model as a low-cost carrier. The airline’s tagline is “seriously nice,” referring to its “nice” fare choices and service between 31 “nice and easy” second-tier cities in 19 states, using mostly A220-300 aircraft. Though it does not charge for changes or cancellations, Breeze does add fees for everything beyond a purse or personal item. It’s safe to say both startups have exciting years ahead, evoking the early days of JetBlue and Southwest Airlines.
